Adventure Journal

Avatar Icon In 2018 we have been travelling for more than 2 months through different countries of souther Africa. After much research on the most famous 4x4 rental companies, in the end we decided on Bushtrackers Africa for several reasons:
- The communication was from the first day very fluid, solving all our doubts and pleas. I have to say that this started several months before the hiring. Heather could not be more attentive and kind to me.
- The price of the total budget for 2 months was almost half that of other companies in the sector.
- The equipment and preparation of the cars offered was even better than others.
For all this, we finally decided on them, and I have to say that we do not have a complaint about the car (Toyota Hilux with 30 000kms) or the equipment, everything has gone smoothly, not even the slightest problem. Everything promised was fulfilled. We felt safe at all times, knowing that if something went wrong, Heather would help us. We will be back in 2019, and of course, go back to using Bushtrackers. THANK YOU for helping make the trip of my life.

Frank M Avatar Africa is not easy but with Bushtrackers you'll get there. As a family for the first in Africa, travelling with a backup as extremely important. As from the panning of the trip (Botswana, Namibia, South Africa) until the handover in Cape Town, we always felt dealing with a professional, proactive company. Of course problems can occur on the road, but the way these are handled by Bushtrackers is topservice. We had a breakdown in Botswana and Bushtrackers took things in hand and within 24 hours we had a replacement vehicle (it was Sunday!!) and could continue our trip and even push back the delay... Thanks Heather, Matt, Richard and the whole BT team. For our next African Trip we will definitely come back to Bushtrackers.

Avatar Icon The perfect 4x4 to rent. We had a great experience with an almost new Toyota Hilux. We drove from Joburg through Botswana. One of the things these 4x4's are so great, is the special bumper that's placed at the front. This makes the difference between getting stuck, of make your ride a nice one! We saw a lot of other 4x4's which were still having the regular bumper. A few of them had serious issues getting through the sandy roads. The car is comfortable (also nice when you stay a lot of hours behind the steering wheel). And we've got a good explanation of how the car, tent, etc works. I'm sure that with this car we had the beautiful trip we had. And, i must be honest, i didn't realized the advantages of the bushtrackers cars before, until we were out there in the bush.

Darin Middleton Avatar We hired the 2.4 double cab to drive up the Mozambique coast and back through Kruger. The truck and camping set up was absolutely brilliant and had everything you needed. The truck and all the gear was near new and in great condition plus booking, pick up and drop off was very easy. Would highly recommend Bushtrackers to anyone

Manuel Arce Garcia Avatar I rented a Toyota Hilux for a three weeks road trip. Very new model, comfortable and reliable all the way.
And comunication with the owners was very easy, they answered really fast to every request or problem we had.
Best hiring experience I had in Africa so far.

Manuel Arce Garcia, 23 May 2018

Matteo Ricci Avatar We are a couple that hired a double cab Hilux. The car was pretty new (2017) and had less than 50000 km. It was perfect for the trip we did to Caprivi, Chobe and Moremi even in the quite wet tracks we found at the beginning of April.

Helen Davies Avatar We had a great experience using the camping 4x4 that Bushtrackers provided. We're a couple that rented a double cab 4x4, giving us extra space for luggage. We could have fitted the luggage in the back, but having it in the cab was more convenient for access, and it feels safer too. The toll roads in Africa are great quality, but once you leave them the roads vary in quality from new to pothole hell. We would think twice about driving around in a normal car, but a 4x4 gave us the confidence that we wouldn't damage the car if we drove carefully. We never needed to have 4x4 enabled really, but knowing that it was there gives you confidence to "give things a try".
It was great that the car was so new, and air conditioning is vital - we comfortably viewed wildlife in Kruger while the outside temperature was 39 degrees C. The service was great and very reasonable. We would recommend to bring some items Bushtrackers does not supply.
1) an inflatable double mattress, as the 50 mm foam that Bushtrackers provide would not have been adequate. (Even though ours got destroyed by a baboon just before the last night!!)
2) A tarp to sit under when it rains. Other than that, we had all the material we needed for camping, it was very convenient, and we would highly recommend Bushtrackers.

Helen Davies, 9 April 2018

Excellent company and great service. We have rented vehicles with Bushtrackers four times in the last 3 years and we have not been disappointed. Their vehicles are well-equipped with good-sized refrigerators, roof-top tents (can request a regular tent), chairs, stove, cooking gear/utensils etc. Their vehicles are fairly new and come with low miles/kilometers. The high clearance and the 4X4 capability are useful if you are self-driving in some national parks (Richtersveld or most parks in Botswana) or even getting to farm accommodations. The extra range diesel tank proved to be very helpful - we comfortably managed about 1000km between fill-ups.

Heather always responds promptly to any enquiry. Discounts are available for longer periods. Prices are reasonable and include insurance. If you want to cross into Namibia or Botswana they take care of the paperwork you need to show at the border crossings. Although now part of a larger Toyota group, Bushtrackers is still a reliable company that provides good service and reasonable cars and equipment; will rent from them again if returning to South Africa.

Frederik Hiergens Avatar Our contact person, Heather, was on top of everything. Clear, fast and easy communication about booking and vehicle collection.
Some bullet points:
They only use cars that are max 2 years old. Our Toyota hilux double cab hardly had 35k km on it and was very well equipped for 4 people. What a pleasure taking it off-road.
Upon request we've got a few extra straps for tying down additional gear to the roof.
We traveled during the low (rainy) season (Feb-March) which we would recommend for everybody as we had all the roads and parks mainly to ourselves. On our 8500km journey through 3 countries, we encountered all kinds of rough terrain: long sandy stretches, deep muddy pools, steep rocky climbs, ... the additional reinforcements such as the bash plate, the heavy duty tires and the bull bar proved to be very useful features to have on our 'bakkie'.
The owner said to return the car uncleaned which proved to be very handy as we got it covered from head to toe in a deep layer of mud and dust. No other car rental company ever has allowed us to do that. All 4 passengers were comfortably seated during this journey, even in the back. Having a double fuel tank proved to be very useful in both Namibia and Botswana as the fuel stations there are few and far apart.
The fridge never went over 7 degrees even when when the car was parked in full sun for a long time. The camping equipment was like advertised and very practically organized They made it possible for us to return the car on a Sunday afternoon They handled some damage to the vehicle swift, cheap and correct: we had strapped the 4 bagged seats on the roof rack. One of them was in contact with the roof and continuous rubbing by driving off road rubbed off the paint off down to the metal. They made no issue out of it and got it fixed for the same cheap price we had gotten a local price quote. Thanks!
If I have to list something that could be improved it would: the mattresses which were a tad too thin...and we missed a tire pressure gouge.

Nice cars, well equipped and god information in advance. No surprises.
We really recommend hiring a car at Bushtrackers in Johannesburg (Sterling Rd). It is a short trip (about 35 min with taxi) from the airport (OR Tabo). We only took a taxi from the hostel we stayed on during the night close to the airport. Bushtrackers also offered to arranges easy transportation for you to their location.

We checked in advance what different rental companies supplied by equipment / type of car. Bushtrackers were both informative and attentive from the very first time we were in touch and have cars that are well equipped. Heather was our contact person and responded well to both mail and Whatsapp. Upon delivery of the car, Heather + two other employees, went through the car with us. They even informed us about some of the few scratches around the car, which we didn't discover by ourself. Best way to do it if you don't want to get discussions afterwards. Best for both parties. Bushtrackers provided good information AND documentation in relation to bordercrossings, showed how the tents on the roof worked, as well as important things with the car. Even with problems at Zambia's border, they quickly followed up and sent us updated documents after a few minutes. The car is built especially for roads in Botswana's national parks. These roads are not in good conditions. We had no problems with the car and it took surprisingly well in the terrain. Border crossings to Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana, overall, went very well.

We returned the car with a small dent on the roof (after walking on the roof) and a little dust blast (damage) on the front windshield. The bill we received on this later responded to what we expected, and even though the car had some small scratches from bushes and trees after the national park tours, we did not get any bill on this as it was possible to polish away.

In summary: Bushtrackers Africa appears professional and tidy. They have no interest in making money on immoral ways afterwards, and didn't try to earn more for "new" insurances after the price was agreed. The price we received in advance was the price we paid. DONE!

Anthony V Avatar Reliable rental company. We rented 2 Toyota Hilux double cab with tents. They have the latest model in perfect working conditions and very well equipped. Bushtrackers is a serious and reliable rental company. We had an accident in Botswana and they were of great assistance. I recommend !

Michael Hardwick Avatar Booking with Bushtrackers was easy and fast. The vehicle had everything we needed and was great for both road and off-road driving. We loved the service and ease of checkout and check-in. If we ever come back, this will be our first call.

Michael Hardwick, 27 November 2017

Avatar Icon Couldn't recommend this company more! We had the best trip to Botswana, and it can easily be credited to the reliability and comfort of the brand new hilux. It had everything we needed, the car performed faultlessly, and the way that Heather and Matt have decked the vehicles out (including a double diesel tank), meant we didn't stress a thing.

The only negative (if it can actually be described as a negative) is that the standout nature of the brand new cars means you're automatically a target for cops. That said, I'd choose this car every time without a hesitation, and a friendly smile to the cops usually allows for a smooth getaway.

As for the service, Heather was an excellent point of call, both before, during, and even after the trip for any questions and queries we had.

Jacqueline B Avatar Hilux Camper with Bushtrackers Started at Johannesburg and rented a HiLux Camper from Bushtrackers. What a great trip we had driving in South Africa including the Lebombo Trail trough Kruger Park.

Heather from Bushtrackers answered all our questions we had in advance and we had a great experience renting the Hilux Camper. Everything was there for camping and car tools, easy stuck away and the car was excellent, great experience and I can suggest everyone to hire a Camper with Bushtrackers!

Zdeněk Fous Avatar We started to plan our amazing journey to Botswana and Namibia long time before the start. All the time Heather from Bushtracker was our great and active advisor. She do not only rent a car she just help you with all needs regarding the journey starting with documentation to cross the border, ending with helping to plan the journey. The car itself (Hillux 3.0 4x4) was very well prepared in excellent technical status. We have two tents easy to built and all necessary camping gear from fork to camping seats, everything in high quality. You just need yourself, good mood and great vacations are in front of you. We did not experience one single problem... I can strongly recommend Bushtrackers with Heather and will certainly hire with them again....

Jenny Isobel Avatar We recently hired a toyota hilux 4x4 for a week long trip to Botswana with Bushtrackers. I'm so glad I chose Bushtrackers - Heather helped me to plan our route and choose the best campsites that were available at short notice, which was hugely helpful as we had never been to Botswana. Bushtrackers sort all the documentation for border crossing out for you, so it is a very easy process. The car is very well equipped and meant we just had to turn up and grab the food and drinks we wanted to take with us in the nearby supermarket. One of the coolest and craziest holidays we have done, and all thanks to Bushtrackers!

Jenny Isobel

Avatar Icon Good, reliable vehicles, nice people We've used Bushtrackers a couple of times. We've always found them to be straightforward, reliable and professional. As well flexible. Their cars are rugged and will take any amount punishment. We won't camp ( I know) but we do a lot of km in and around southern Africa. They key with all hire car companies is to discuss and agree as much detail as possible beforehand. They've been bought out by a bigger group so not quite as flexible but still a first class service. We're going back for a 3rd time in January 2018.

Avatar Icon Great service – check the car carefully on pickup.
We have hired from Bushtrackers previously, without hesitation we hired from them a 2nd time. They have moved to a new location, which has the advantage that you can do a couple of loops of the quiet road on the industrial estate before hitting the highway and signalling with the windscreen wipers.

The service from Matt and Heather (the world’s nicest person) is great.

We had a couple of minor issues with the camping equipment, we detected very early on, and they were quickly rectified. A little disappointing that the customers have to find these things. We had a 2 tent model. All the equipment we needed for camping came with the car, it all worked very well, we slept comfortably every night, including the night we had Hyena within 10m of the car (with no fences). Put your shoes in the tents at night, my son found some frogs had decided his shoes look like a great place to hang out.

Since last time we hired, they have a new fleet of HiLux, I much preferred the older ones. The 2.8 Hilix we had drove fantastically well on the roads, and we very comfortably covered the longer days of road driving we had planned. Off road the car was very capable, however I found it difficult to see where I was going, as the bonnet is long and high. As most of the 4x4 hire shops use HiLux, this will become a common problem amongst them all. Maybe I am too used to driving the tractor at home.

The factory fit M&S tyres on the HiLux were not really up to the off roading we tried – The Lobombo Trail. The man in the Kurger Park garage was very animated about the tyres when we asked him to repair a puncture. In sand, we needed 4x4 much earlier than I expected.

Taking an almost brand new car off road was not something that filled me with joy – and not unexpectedly we ended up with some damage. The price that Bushtrackers charged for damage repair was extremely reasonable – much less than I would have expected in the UK. We drove well over 400km off road, including a long section in a dry river bed - almost impossible not to get at least one scrape. I'm not sure how this car would have coped with the disused railway we found on our last trip.

or a longer hire period (8 weeks plus), the prices will be such that buying a lesser vehicle is an option to consider. If I hire again, I'd ask for a older (battered) car, that blends in a little more in the rural areas.

For those considering a hire & drive in South Africa for the 1st time, some observations. The roads are generally good, and driving standards are generally good. Unsurfaced roads (which can almost always be avoided) are very variable, some being almost as good as tar, and others being so bad the Mrs got out the car and walked. Fuel is around half the cost of UK.
